Adoption
Please
read the following terms if you are considering adoption:
If you are interested in adopting a
dog from us, please understand that we have certain guidelines that
must be met before we will work with you. Once we take a dog into
rescue, we do everything we can to make sure they go into a
permanent loving home for the rest of their lives. It is important
that the lifestyle of the adopting family and the personality and
requirements of the dog match for this to be a successful
relationship.
If you have any pet currently or previously not spayed or neutered,
up to date on all vaccinations, on heartworm and flea and tick
prevention, and not allowed to live indoors, please do not contact
us about our dogs.
If you find a dog that you are interested in, please contact us to
find out more information about the dog. If it sounds like a
potential match, fill out the adoption contract and send it to us.
Please understand that more than one person may be interested in a
dog and we place the dog in the home based on the best match and the
time frame that we were contacted. We do often have a waiting list
of people who are looking for a dog and we contact them when we have
a potential match.
Once we receive your application, we review the information and
contact your vet references. If you have never had a pet or it has
been so long that you have no current vet reference, three personal
references should be given. It is very helpful if you contact your
vet or personal references and let them know we will be calling
them.
Once we have identified you as a potential adopter, we will contact
you and set up a visit with the dog. If we believe your lifestyle is
not a good fit for the dog you are interested in, you will not be
considered for that dog. We may suggest a dog that is a better match
for you or put you on our list to contact for a dog.
We can set up a visit for you to meet dogs. We always require a home
visit before a dog will be placed with you. We have suggestions for
introducing your potential new family member to other members of
your family and making a safe environment for your new family
member.
We only adopt to families in the Richmond area or a one to two hour
radius. We are a small group and require a home visit, so long
distance adoptions are just not available.
Once the application and home visit requirements are met, we require
a two week foster to adopt period. During this time the rescue group
provides everything the dog will need. We stay in close contact for
the two weeks to answer questions and provide any help to make this
a permanent adoption. If at some point during the two weeks it just
doesn’t seem to work out, we come and get the dog back. If things
look like a good match at the end of the foster period, we meet and
you get a copy of the vet records and pay the adoption fee. At that
time you will need to have purchased all of the necessary items for
the dog so you return the supplies furnished by the rescue group. If
you choose to keep any of the supplies, we request that you
reimburse us.
The adoption fee ranges from $100 to $350 and is required at the
time that we finalize the adoption. This fee is non-refundable.
